Frank Van Riper

Frank Van Riper is an award-winning documentary and commercial photographer, author, lecturer, and journalist. His work is in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC, and the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME. For 19 years, Frank was the photography columnist of The Washington Post. His column, Talking Photography, is now available online at www.TalkingPhotography.com.

A former journalist and 1979 Nieman Fellow at Harvard, Van Riper is a popular teacher and lecturer and has led photography workshops in Maine, Umbria, and Venice with his wife and professional partner, Judith Goodman. Their latest joint book is The Green Heart of Italy: Umbria and its Ancient Neighbors (Fall 2025).

For more than two decades Van Riper has been on the faculty of Photoworks at Glen Echo Park, MD, where, in addition to teaching, he created—and curated for nine years—the critically acclaimed Mirror to the World annual exhibition of documentary photography.
