Taina Litwak

Taina Litwak is a passionate environmentalist living in Darnestown, MD. She spent 43 years making images documenting the natural world alongside scientists at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, US Dept. of Agriculture, and other prominent research institutions. She illustrated new species, contributed to textbooks and magazines, and poured her energy into making science legible and beautiful.

By 2020, she needed to speak more personally about the state of the biosphere and began making paintings and sculptures again. Working in acrylics, she collages newspaper and maps onto canvas. Her installations and sculptures are monochromatic assemblages. Since 1979, she has exhibited around the USA, internationally, and in numerous Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD area galleries including Hillyer, Crow's Nest, the Katzen Arts Center, Touchstone, and Foundry Galleries, Strathmore, and the Washington Project for the Arts. Her work is reaching thousands of people on issues she considers existential: climate change, biodiversity loss, and plastic pollution.
