Ruth Marcus

Ruth Marcus is a Washington, DC–based painter whose work explores the beauty, atmosphere, and light of the places she encounters. Working primarily in oil and gouache, she creates expressive landscapes inspired by travel and direct observation. Many of her paintings are made on site, while others are developed in the studio from sketches, studies, and photographs. Her recent travels throughout Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Portugal, France, Iceland and Scandinavia have provided rich inspiration for her evolving body of work.

Before becoming a full-time artist, Marcus had a distinguished career as an art educator in New York City and Washington, DC, including long tenures at the Dalton School and Georgetown Day School. She maintains a studio in Chevy Chase, DC, and has exhibited throughout New York, California, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
